Kathmandu- The Russian Embassy celebrated the Victory Day with great grandeur at the Russian House in Kathmandu.
The event was held at the Russian House located in Kamalpokhari, Kathmandu. The program saw the presence of Russian Ambassador to Nepal Alexey Vladimirovich Surovtsev, Minister Counselor Rinchen Rakshaev, Russian House Director Anastasia Khokhlova, representatives of Mitrakunj, journalists, and diplomats.

During the program, the ambassador spoke about why Victory Day is celebrated and how Russia achieved victory in the Second World War fought from 1941 to 1945. Recalling that his father had been shot in the shoulder and that the bullet had passed just three centimeters from his heart, an emotional Alexey said that memories of the war always make him deeply sentimental.
‘The Nazi regime of Germany had advanced close to Moscow while attacking the then Soviet Union. To defeat the Nazi army that had reached the Donetsk and Kursk regions, 27 million citizens of the Soviet Union sacrificed their lives. My father also took part in that war. The bullet that struck him passed three centimeters away from his heart. Fortunately, he survived. That is why I am here before you today,’ the ambassador said emotionally.
Ambassador Alexey also spoke about why Russia is conducting what it calls a ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine. He accused NATO and Western nations of using the Kyiv leadership against Russian-speaking citizens. He claimed that although Russia could defeat Ukraine very quickly, the people dying are originally citizens of the former Soviet Union, so the objective is to remove what he described as a Western-backed regime with minimal damage and ensure the liberation of the people.
At the event, Minister Counselor Rinchen Rakshaev of the Russian Embassy performed songs. Rakshaev, who also sang the Nepali song Rato Ra Chandra Surya,’ performed a song titled ‘On a Nameless Height.’ The multi-talented Rinchen, together with a team of Mitrakunj officials, also presented several Russian songs.
Russia celebrated Victory Day grandly on May 8. Eighty-one years ago, it achieved victory in the war against Hitler’s Nazi regime in Germany. During the event, thanks were also extended to Britain and the United States for their support during the war.
Concluding the program, Director Anastasia Khokhlova expressed gratitude for the support and solidarity shown by the Nepali community and extended Victory Day greetings to everyone.
As Russia celebrates Victory Day, a three-day ceasefire has been declared amid the ongoing tensions in Ukraine. At one time, Russia and Ukraine had jointly fought together against the war waged by Germany.
