Kathmandu- Founder of Health at Home and Nepali young health entrepreneur Dr. Bishal Dhakal has presented his innovative concept on an international platform, emphasizing the need to expand healthcare services directly into homes.
Dhakal represented Nepal at the Open Dialogue: ‘The Future of the World. A Platform for Global Growth’, organized by the National Center of Russia and held from 27 to 29 April; was selected through an essay competition. The event drew participation from roughly 50 countries, with delegates from 45 nations actively presenting their perspectives. The forum included representation from the United States, Africa, Australia, and various regions of Asia, and has been regarded as a global platform for policy dialogue.
At the program, economists and experts from around the world discussed four key areas of investment: human capital, technology, environment, and communication. According to the organizers, the discussions aimed to identify the foundations of a new global development model. Selected participants presented their proposals through outstanding essays, and the conclusions of the program are expected to be used in future policies and strategies in the form of an ‘open report.’
Representing Nepal, Dhakal presented a working paper focusing on innovation in public health related to human capital, the concept of home-based healthcare services, the challenges of an aging population, and ways to reduce the growing financial burden on the state.
At the program, Dhakal presented a detailed concept on how ‘Health at Home’ can be developed as a startup, and how it can be advanced in a commercial manner while compelling the state to engage at the policy level.
During the event, Dhakal highlighted that increasing population, aging and rapid demographic changes worldwide are creating new challenges in public health. He stated that it would be difficult for governments alone to handle these challenges and proposed a home-based healthcare model as a long-term solution. According to him, decentralizing healthcare services and making them available at the community level is essential to mitigate future crises.
After completing his medical education in Russia, Dhakal revisited his university, where he shared his experiences and ideas. He explained the connection between the knowledge he gained there and the ‘Health at Home’ model he is implementing in Nepal, emphasizing the need for innovation based on local needs.
Born in Janakpur, Dhakal completed his early education in Nepal before finishing his medical studies in Russia. While studying cardiac surgery in Lahore, Pakistan, he returned to Nepal and established his health initiative.
In terms of international experience, he has participated in global entrepreneurship programs three times. In 2014, he also received a fellowship awarded by the United States Department of State, which was related to promoting innovation and youth entrepreneurship.
Dhakal has traveled to more than 30 countries and is proficient in over five languages. He states, ‘Expanding new models of healthcare access globally is the need of the hour, and international collaboration will be essential for this.’
Dhakal has been an advocate for innovation, entrepreneurship, and social responsibility. He asserts that Nepal is not small or weak but a powerful source of new ideas, claiming that ideas originating from Nepal have contributed to significant global progress.
