Putin and Oli Chart New Course for Nepal–Russia Relations at SCO Summit in Tianjin

Tianjin, China– Marking a significant advancement in Nepal–Russia relations, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Nepali Prime Minister K.P. Oli held a high-level bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin.

Described as a diplomatic breakthrough, the meeting emphasized both countries’ shared commitment to strengthening ties through practical collaboration, strategic alignment, and a shared vision for regional peace and stability.

Discussions focused on initiatives aimed at delivering real benefits to both nations. Prime Minister Oli expressed Nepal’s strong interest in launching direct flights between Nepal and Russia, a move expected to boost tourism, facilitate trade, and enhance people-to-people connections. He also pushed for an increase in Russian scholarships for Nepali students, aiming to deepen educational and cultural exchanges.

The leaders agreed to broaden cooperation in areas such as culture, economics, and investment, paving the way for a more diversified and dynamic partnership.

As a sign of mutual goodwill, the two leaders exchanged official invitations: Oli invited Putin to visit Nepal, while Putin extended a warm welcome to Oli to visit Russia. The meeting also held symbolic weight, coming as the two countries prepare to celebrate a milestone anniversary in their diplomatic relations.

Beyond bilateral affairs, the dialogue also addressed regional dynamics, particularly Nepal’s potential role within the evolving Russia–India–China strategic framework. President Putin praised Nepal’s contributions to South Asian stability, aligning it with his vision of a “Greater Eurasian Security” initiative focused on promoting regional cooperation and sustainable peace.

The Tianjin talks concluded with a clear message: Nepal and Russia are committed to elevating their partnership through trust, actionable steps, and a progressive agenda. As the Eurasian landscape continues to evolve, the renewed engagement between the two nations is set to play a constructive role in fostering peace, connectivity, and development across the region.
