Kathmandu- On November 24, 2025, the first gala ceremony of the Diamond Butterfly Open Eurasian Film Award will be held in Moscow. Its principal purpose is to remind the world of the true mission of cinema: to address values, culture and universal essences, leaving commercial success in the background. This new Film Award has been established for films that preserve the culture, history and traditions of their countries and form spiritual guidelines. The Open Eurasian Film Award is intended for all countries that strive to protect traditional values and respect their national culture.
The Film Award is already being compared to the Oscars in scale and significance and has also been called one of the most anticipated initiatives in global cinema industry. This is the first and key event of the Eurasian Academy of Cinematographic Arts, uniting representatives of the film industry from all over the world and opening a new space for creativity, cultural dialogue and support for national film initiatives.
The project of creating the Eurasian Film Academy and the new international film award is supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin: “The idea of creating such an academy has attracted great interest in the professional community. The Eurasian Film Academy means not only mutual encouragement of the development of national film industries and film markets. A major educational program, master classes, student exchanges, and joint projects have been planned, which will allow young filmmakers to get to know and understand each other better.”
“Generally speaking, the Eurasian Film Academy will defend the importance of cinema and its influence on the life of every person in every country,” said Nikita Mikhalkov, the initiator and inspirator behind the creation of the Film Academy and Film Award.
The Eurasian Academy of Cinematographic Arts and the Diamond Butterfly Open Eurasian Film Award are established by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Russian Cultural Foundation. The Film Award is organized by the Russian Cultural Foundation. The projects were presented on April 22, 2025, on the stage of Nikita Mikhalkov’s Workshop 12 in Moscow.
At the moment, more than 20 countries have already applied to participate in the Academy. A total of 30 films have been submitted to date. The full list of participating countries and the names of the nominees will be known in October 2025.
All winners of the Film Award will get cash prizes. The winner in the nomination “Best Picture” will receive a reward equivalent to 1 million dollars, other winners will be awarded a prize of 250 thousand dollars. In addition, all winners will be awarded the symbol of the Award — the Diamond Butterfly. Each statuette is encrusted with almost 5,000 diamonds and designed by the famous artist Yuri Kuper who has exhibited his works all over the world more than 50 times — in the Tretyakov Gallery, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, leading museums in Paris, New York, Geneva and other cities.
